Global Livingston Institute: Summer Program
Engage in Hands-on Learning with the Global Livingston Institute
The Global Livingston Institute (GLI) brings students, educators, and community leaders to East Africa on immersion experiences that engage deeply with locals. The GLI operates two campuses in Uganda and is engaged with a number of social impact and community development initiatives in Uganda and Rwanda.
Application Deadline: February 28, 2025
The three week program begins with an immersion to introduce students to the country, the culture, international community development work, GLI and its ongoing projects, and a variety of partners doing community development work in Uganda. It will include time in Kampala and in Southeastern rural Uganda and will include cultural activities as well as numerous opportunities to connect with organizations and Ugandans to learn more about the country and ongoing efforts in community development. Students will then finish the program in Rwanda to learn about community development and conservation work done by various NGOs and local community organizations.
Housing and Meals
Housing and Meals
Students will stay in guest houses and hotels and at the GLI Entusi Center on Lake Bunyonyi while in Uganda and hotels while in Rwanda. Most meals are provided as part of the program.
Activities and Excursions
The program includes a wide range of activities and excursions designed to introduce students to Uganda and Rwanda, GLI and GLI's partner organizations. This includes visits to social enterprises and non-profits, engagement with locals, a city tour of the capital city Kampala, and various tours in the Lake Bunyonyi region and other parts of Uganda. In Rwanda, students will visit sites and organizations in Musanze and Kigali
Things to Consider
- Same-sex relations are criminalized in Uganda and social acceptance remains very low in both Uganda and Rwanda. LGBTQIA+ students should carefully and thoroughly check the US Department of State LGBTI Travelers page and ILGA Sexual Orientation Laws in the World for more information as well as the IP Your Identity Abroad page in MyRollins.
- Students with mobility disabilities may find accessibility and accommodations different from the United States. Check the US Department of State Travelers with Disabilities and specific to the country, Mobility International USA, and the IP "Your Identity Abroad" page in MyRollins.
